SIX local lads have finished a five-a-side charity football tournament as winners: despite taking the wooden spoon!
Matthew Pratt, Ben Dawson, Ross Moir, Danny Braidwood, Jonathan McGillivray and Michael Topp participated in the NSPCC’s annual ChildLine World Footie tournament in Glasgow earlier this month, raising more than £1400 for the charity, which acts as a free and confidential helpline for children in need of advice or support. Nine teams from across Scotland competed in the event, representing nine ‘nations’, with the boys from Ellon playing as England. The day raised £6800 overall.
Despite coming in last, the Ellon team came away with the prize for ‘Best Fundraisers’ in recognition of their efforts to get sponsorship.
Team captain Michael Topp said afterwards: “We had another really enjoyable day at World Footie this year. Unfortunately we came in last place, but we were awarded with the title of best fundraisers, so we’re really pleased.”
