ABERDEENSHIRE Council’s efforts to improve road safety have been recognised with a prestigious UK award.

The local authority’s Transportation Team has been recognised at the National Transport Awards 2012, held in London earlier this month, where they received the top honour in the Most Effective Road Safety, Traffic Management & Enforcement Project category.

It is the first time that a Scottish local authority has won an accolade at the awards.

In recent years Aberdeenshire Council has made significant progress in school transport safety, including the first UK trial of the innovative SeeMe interactive school bus stop system, trials of new higher-visibility school bus signage and the development of the Bus Stop! safety awareness campaign.

Efforts to improve road safety have shown marked results, with fatal road traffic collisions seeing a 55 per cent drop from 22 in 2010 to 10 in 2011. The number of serious accidents also dropped in that period, from 202 to 132.

Also recognised were partnership working, such as Operation Zenith and the Joint Road Safety Plan.
