Academy breaks record with dance
PUPILS from Ellon Academy will find themselves in the next edition of the Guiness Book of Records, after holding the world’s biggest ever ‘Superman’ dance.
Pupils from the Academy turned out in force on Friday at the Deer Park to participate in the mass dance, which was officially recorded so that the record can be verified. The event took place both as a fundraiser, and as a citizenship element of the school’s Curriculum for Excellence programme.
The pupils performed in 80s clothes, and were led by Rector Tim McKay on stage. Some of the gaudier costumes included a Zippy (of Rainbow) suit, a Honey Monster, and a number of Guns n’ Roses Slash impersonators. Everyone else was asked to wear at least two pieces of clothing from era.
Estimates are that around a thousand pupils turned out for the event, which also featured local community groups’ stalls and a barbeque selling burgers.
Depute Rector Kim Hall told the Times that the days’ events had been well supported by the local community, and that the record had indeed been broken.
“We had a fab turnout and all staff and pupils supported this, though I need to get all the paperwork back before I can confirm participant numbers and the total amount of money raised.”
“All money raised is to continue to pay for pupils’ extra curricular programmes and transport in school.”
