Autism alert card: North East SNP MSP Mark McDonald highlighted the importance of Grampians new initiative, during his Members Business Debate at Parliament.

Following his attendance at the launch of the Autism Alert card last month, Mr McDonald, SNP MSP, lodged a motion in Parliament to raise awareness of the initiative.

The card demonstrates a strong commitment from the organisations that have signed up to it, which include Grampian Police, NHS Grampian, the three north-east councils, Autism Initiatives Scotland, G4S, Grampian Autistic Society and The National Autistic Society. The input of G4S, which handles prisoner transfer, is an important facet, alongside Grampian Police’s involvement.

The card has been launched to help ensure that those with the condition are quickly identified and supported by Grampian Police and a range of partner organisations.

During the debate, the card’s importance nationally was widely recognised along with its contribution to improving understanding of autism in the criminal justice system.

Commenting after the debate, Mr McDonald said, “I hope that by raising this important initiative in Parliament, it will help to promote the card not only within Grampian, but nationwide.

“The National Autistic Society Scotland has confirmed that the cards are already helping people with Autism to help cope with social and communication difficulties.

“It was a great honour to be involved with the initiative and I would encourage anyone who wishes further information on the card to contact National Autistic Society Scotland.”
