Balmedie family seeks help for Pompe Disease sufferer Sean

A BALMEDIE family is appealing for the public to make life easier for their severely-disabled son - by donating old mobile phones.

Sean Tye (3), suffers from Pompe Disease, a rare genetic disorder which causes severe muscle weakness.

The wee lad is one of just two children in Scotland who has the condition, requiring round-the-clock care from his parents.

Father Ching Shen and mother Yafan Zhao have launched the appeal in the hope of raising enough money to build a custom-designed facility for their son at the side of the house.

Ching Shen told the Times: “There will be more space for the equipment Sean needs - there will be a bathroom, bedroom and storage space for his medical supplies.

“Just now, Sean is confined to a tiny room with barely enough space for his bed and furniture. I also have to carry him upstairs to go to the toilet.”

The extension has already been half built with help from CHAP construction, who are erecting the structure at cost price, and architect Raymond Simpson who is designing the structure for free.

The family has also received significant donations from the Trump Organisation and Aberdeenshire Care & Repair, a charity that adapts houses for people who are disabled. The mobile phone appeal, organised by Northsound 1’s ‘Cash4Kids’ charity, aims to cover the remaining £17,000 necessary to complete construction, in conjunction with Aberdeen company WeBuyAnyPhone, who will contribute profits from the appeal towards the family’s extension.

Anyone with an old mobile phone they’d be willing to part with can drop it into Northsound on Abbotswell Road, Aberdeen, or email cashforkids@webuyanyphone.com to request a freepost donation envelope.
