AN ELLON man with a talent for music is set for the biggest performance of his life next month at Black History Month in Edinburgh.

Jake Coghill will travel to Edinburgh to perform for delegates to the event, which has become a high profile event in Scotland in recent years. Black history Month aims to celebrate aspects of African history perceived to be forgotten by mainstream historiography, and to highlight cultural links between Scotland and Africa. The annual events have developed to incorporate theatre, live music and other artforms illustrating Scottish-African cultural links.

Jakes performance is set to take place at the Balmoral Hotel on Princess Street, where the audience will include important individuals from the world of politics, media and academia.

Speaking to the Times, Jake said that he was looking forward to performing at the event.

“I’m really looking forward to it,” he said. “It should be a good night to showcase some music to the audience -I’ll be playing indie rock. There’s supposed to be a few folk performing - it’ll be a mixture of Scottish music and music from the rest of the world, including Africa.

“I understand that Gordon Brown will be there. It’ll be a privilege to perform in front of a former Prime Minister.”

The 21-year old painter and decorator who works in Pitmedden enjoys performing whenever possible, and added that he hoped someday to be able to puruse his hobby professionally.

Proud father Kevin Coghill helped arrange the performance with friend Godfrey Nyakura of the Scottish Zimbabwe Group, who helped secured a place for Jake to perform at the event.

A spokesman for the Scottish Zimbabwe Group said: “The event will be part of the month long celebration of the contribution made by Black Ethnic Minority people to the wider Scottish society. The SZG is hosting a Black History Celebrations and Awards Night on October 20.”
