Chef Orry is ‘game’ for success
Game Chef of the Year Orry Shand with his award at his home in Ellon.
A YOUNG chef from Ellon is celebrating after landing a top accolade. Orry Shand won the prestigious Game Chef of the Year 2013 award.
Orry, 23, beat off competition from across the UK and the competition involved a six-month search to find the best upcoming, professional game chef in the country.
The contest was organised by Braehead Foods, one of Braitain’s biggest game suppliers,
Orry, who works in an Edinburgh hotel and formerly cooked at the Udny restaurant Eat on the Green, created two dishes for the competition using Scottish wild rabbit and woodcock.
During a visit home this week the former Ellon Academy pupil told the Times: “I’m delighted to have won. It was good because there were chefs from around the UK competing and I was one of the youngest taking part.”
Mum Angela and dad Alistair are proud of their son, whose many other awards include three-time Grampian Young Chef of the Year.
Angela said: “It’s amazing what he has achieved. We are extremely proud of Orry.”
Contestants were challenged to cook up fresh, innovative dishes using some of the finest game in the UK.
The award-winning chef and the two runners-up will head to Sweden for boar shooting and deer stalking, courtesy of Highland Game.
The calibre of finalists was praised by the judges.
Joe Queen, Executive Chef of Braehead Foods said: “We were pleased to see that the standard and quality of entrants this year was so much higher than last.
“The young chefs produced award-winning dishes. They have put in a lot of effort and all did extremely well to reach the finals.
The event was held in the Cook School Scotland, Ayrshire, which boasts state-of-the-art facilities. Organisers said that not every chef has a great knowledge of game or the skills to prepare and present it, so it makes the competition exciting and challenging.
