Chopper ditch ‘reminder of dangers’ - First Minister

Commenting on the incident that saw a helicopter ditch in the North Sea earlier this afternoon, First Minister Alex Salmond said it was a stark reminder of the dangers offshore workers face.

He said: “This is a very concerning time for the friends and family of the 14 people on board the helicopter which has ditched in the North Sea.

“Thankfully it has been confirmed that all on board have been rescued and the indications are they will all be admitted to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary on a precautionary basis.

“Incidents such as these remain very rare but do serve as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by those offshore workers who are required to use helicopters on a regular basis.

“Once all of those involved have been transferred ashore the priority will be for the appropriate authorities to investigate the causes of this accident and ensure the future safety of flying operations in the North Sea.”

Grampian Police said it was not possible at this time to provide further detailed information at this stage but the next of kin of those involved will be advised and further information will be made available as soon as possible.

It is assisting in the response to this incident in co-operation with the MCA, COPFS and the relevant offshore companies.

One helicopter has landed at ARI. Doctors at A&E are currently carrying out assessments of the passengers on board. They are expecting a second helicopter shortly.
