Members of the Cruden Old Church congregation and the local community have been told that SNP councillors will work to keep access to the church over Bishop’s Bridge.
The B-listed bridge has been recommended for closure after a number of vehicular accidents damaged the structure.
There have however been concerns that the closure would force members of the congregation of the nearby church to take long detours.
SNP councillor for Peterhead South and Cruden Stephen Smith said: “The Bishop’s Bridge is an important local historic structure which needs to be protected and it’s right that action is taken to preserve it.
“However, the feedback I’ve had from the community is that while they accept something needs to be done, access to the church via this route is important.
“Myself and councillor Stuart Pratt, with the support of the Area Committee, therefore requested that the Aberdeenshire Council Roads Department look at what measures could be put in place to ensure that access could continue, for example on Sunday mornings.”
Current plans had limited access over the 2.4 metre wide carriageway to pedestrians, cyclists and motorbike riders.
