Council Design Awards see local projects recognised

SIX local projects have been recognised for the standard of their design at a special ceremony at Haddo House on Thursday.

The projects were singled out for praise from judges of the Aberdeenshire Design Awards 2012. The projects included the Turra Coo in Turriff; the Huntly Arms Hotel; Threadneedle Street in Peterhead; Mill of Eslie in Strachan; Westerton Wood in Aboyne and The Goat Shed in Tarves.

Overall winner of the Ian Shepherd Award was Westerton Wood, with the other entrants each taking distinctions.

The awards were founded with a view towards encouraging exceptional design and architecture in the shire, with architects, artists and builders invited to submit entries to the awards. Judging took place over the course of July, when the council’s judging panel visited each site. 106 entries were received in total, over seven different categories.

Councillor Peter Argyle, chairman of Aberdeenshire Council’s Infrastructure Services Committee and of the judging panel, said: “The standard of entries we received for this year’s awards was exceptionally high, and as a result, the judging panel felt it appropriate to give the accolade of Distinction to double the number of entrants to 2010.

“We are lucky enough to live in an exceptionally beautiful part of the world and it is only right that our built environment reflects and complements that. I’d like to congratulate once again all the entries for this year’s Design Awards.”

Vice-chair of Aberdeenshire Council’s Infrastructure Services Committee, Councillor Alan S. Buchan, added: “It has been a pleasure to be involved in the judging of these awards- it has really given me an insight into some of the amazing design on display across Aberdeenshire.”
