Council update on flooding work

COUNCILLORS will be updated this week on the work carried out after serious flooding affected many parts of Aberdeenshire in December.

Millions of pounds of damage was caused to property throughout the area during coastal storms on December 15 and flooding on December 23.

Council staff have been carrying out repairs and assessing the reasons behind the flooding of recent months, as well as progressing preparatory work on longer-term flood alleviation measures.

An update on what work has been carried out so far, and plans for the future, will be delivered to members of the policy and resources committee.

A report gives details of a multi-agency meeting held in Stonehaven last month, attended by around 400 local residents affected by flooding.

At the committee meeting, Philip McKay, the council’s head of roads and landscape services, will give more detail about the work that has already been carried out.

He will also report on the situation at the multiple sites where 33 incidents of flooding were reported on December 23.

Council chief executive Colin Mackenzie said: “Repair and analysis following the flooding and coastal storms of December last year is a priority for the council.

“We recognise the feeling of local people in Stonehaven and elsewhere that we must act quickly and decisively. This meeting is an opportunity for councillors to be updated on what work has been carried out and what plans are being made for the future.”
