Council introduces recycling project

A TRIAL project has been launched by Aberdeenshire Council in a bid to help the public to recycle smaller goods.

Two new electrical appliance recycling banks were installed in Port Elphinstone and Insch by the local authority yesterday (Wednesday) as part of a scheme to allow people to recycle small items such as irons, radios, hairdryers and clocks more easily.

The banks will be located at recycling points in the two locations and the aim is to encourage people to recycle more and save them a longer journey to a Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC).

The new facilities will be clearly marked with items that can and cannot be accepted. Those that cannot be accepted at the recycling bank, such as batteries and lightbulbs, can be recycled at a HWRC.

The trial will be closely monitored for usage and contamination and if it is successful, more banks will be introduced in other parts of Aberdeenshire.

Chairman of Aberdeenshire Council’s infrastructure services committee, Councillor Peter Argyle, said: “Aberdeenshire Council is passionate about recycling and this is a fantastic opportunity for local residents to do their bit for the environment and recycle more.

“It’s also worth looking at the council website to see the wide range of materials that can be accepted now – maybe more than you realise.”

Councillor Jill Webster, who is committee vice-chair, added: “I think this is a great initiative and I will be very interested to see the results of the trials. I would urge all local residents to take advantage of the new recycling banks so they become a permanent fixture for the towns.”

The recycling banks have been supplied to the council by contractors European Recycling Platform (ERP).

Large items like washing machines or monitors will still need to be taken to a HWRC, or can be collected by arranging a special uplift through Wasteline on 0845 600 3 900 (charges apply).

Call Wasteline or visit www.aberdeenshire.gov.uk/waste and enter your address or postcode for the locations of HWRC and recycling points.
