Cruden Bay SNP councillors Smith and Pratt welcome housing boost for village

AS THE finishing touches are put to the first council houses to be built in Cruden Bay in a generation, local SNP councillors have welcomed the investment in local housing.

The development at John Buchan Drive comprises two-semi detached homes already completed as part of the first phase, and an additional 11 homes for rent which are nearing completion comprising four semi detached two-bedroom homes, two three-bedroom homes, one four-bedroom detached home and a block of four one-bedroom flats.

Peterhead South & Cruden SNP councillor Stephen Smith said: “I am delighted to see this much needed new council housing development coming to fruition. I’m also pleased that the Scottish Government has invested in Cruden bay with a substantial part of the cost of this development coming from a Government grant to help make this happen.

“Cruden Bay hasn’t seen any new council housing built in a generation. As a consequence, there is a great lack of affordable housing to rent and a huge waiting list for social housing. I know from my surgeries just how important these additional houses will be in helping people get a home of their own in Cruden Bay.”

Buchan Area Chairman and SNP councillor Stuart Pratt added: “The Scottish Government is committed to providing a new generation of homes for rent. By ending right to buy for new tenants and by providing financial support for local authorities, they’ve not only managed to kick-start a new round of local authority building, but will retain up to 18,000 homes across Scotland in the social rented sector over the next ten years.

“Being able to move into a modern, affordable property can make a real difference to people’s lives. Given the pressures on the housing market in the North-east currently, this investment in the future of Cruden Bay is both welcome and timely.

“It’s been a long time since Cruden Bay has seen any new council houses built, so this is a very welcome development indeed.”
