THE Ythan Bakery in Ellon is in the running for a top award. The shop in the town’s Bridge Street is on the shortlist for the Scottish Baker of the Year.
Its bridies have won high praise from a panel of experts and the bakery, owned by Dawn and Michael Gillan, will find out on Saturday, May 12, if it has landed the prestigious honour.
The business, which has 25 staff, has been family run since 1970 and prides itself in having a loyal customer base.
Mrs Gillan said: “It is quite an achievement for us to reach this stage, and we have to thank our customers.
“They had to fill in a competition entry form voting for our best products and our wholemeal bread and bridies came out on top.”
The bakery’s bridies will receive a gold, silver, or bronze award at what will be the first Scottish Baker of the Year event.
Customers across Scotland voted for their best bakery products during March and the top 30 in each of the five categories were baked and delivered to Fife for judging by independent experts. They were led by head judge Robert Ross and included retired master bakers with extensive experience of the sector in Scotland.
Mr Ross said: “The sheer number of votes has given us a good indication of how strongly the people of Scotland feel about their High Street bakers and we were delighted with the quality of the products we had to judge.
“We believe the Ythan Bakery is worthy of its place on the shortlist and should be proud to be counted among the best of the best of Scottish baking.”
The results will be announced by artisan baker and television presenter Paul Hollywood.
