Ellon butteries among best in region

An Ellon bakery have seen one of their products recognised as among the best in the the North of Scotland.

The butteries at Ythan Bakery feature among the top three in the region, meaning the family firm are in the running to be named the Scottish Baker of the Year 2014.

Owners Mike and Dawn Gillan have operated the bakery for nearly 30 years, although Dawn’s late father started running the shop in 1970.

Dawn told the Times she is very excited about the recent developments.

She said: “We won gold last year in our region, so we are hoping to do it again this year!

“It’s all down to our customers voting for us online. We sell a lot of butteries - they are very popular!”

More than 20,000 people voted for their favourite bakery products across six categories and earlier this month, over 100 bakers delivered 600 of the most popular products for 40 judges and experts.

Scottish Bakers Chief Executive Alan Clarke said: “We took delivery of excellent scones, loaves, savoury items, morning rolls, individual cakes and biscuits made by artisan bakers and our judges, led by head judge Robert Ross, have once again done us proud, we have a strong shortlist to take forward to the next stage.”

Each of the seven categories has been split into three regions, including Northern, Central and Southern Scotland.

Judges will award regional Gold, Silver and Bronze awards within each section.

All the shortlisted bakers will be invited to a ceremony in Glasgow on May 17 presented by TV judge and celebrity cake-designer Mich Turner when they will find out what colour their regional award is to receive.

Regional winners will also be judged on a national level meaning they could be crowned the Scottish Baker of the Year.
