Ellon dancers return from Canada with over 80 awards

Pupils from a dance school based in Ellon have returned home from a competition in Canada.

Nineteen dancers from the Rosaline Hendry School jetted off to Vancouver for the Scotdance Canada Championships.

The talented pupils returned home recently with 66 medals and 16 trophies after three days of competing.

Teacher, Rosaline Hendry, said that everyone had an absolutely brilliant time and exceeded all expectations.

She said: “The dancers were delighted with their medals and special awards which were all designed by artists local to British Columbia.

“Trophies for the Super Sailor Challenge were beautiful glass boats - quite amazing!

“We all returned exhausted but feeling that all the hard work, practice and fundraising had been well worth it.

“Now the focus is on the World Championship in Dunoon at the end of August!”

Medals were won during the Highland National Premiership, International Broadsword Special Event, The Super Super Sailor Hornpipe Challenge and The Open Championship.

The school had a winning dancer in each of the three broadsword categories - Rachel Havlin, Patricia Kelly and Rebecca Thow as well as five finalists in the super sailor challenge - Rosey Watt, Rachel Johnston, Billie Sim, Emma Johnston and Rebecca Thow.

Main Trophy winners were:

Rosey Watt, from Macduff - 9yrs Highland winner, 9yrs National Premiership winner, 3rd place Super Sailor Challenge, 9yrs Open Championship winner.

She also picked up the Alex and May Martin Trophy for most points overall and the Irene Baird Trophy for best overseas dancer.

Ellon dancer Rachel Havlin - 1st place for the under 13 International Broadsword Event.

Patricia Kelly, from Kemnay, 1st place (13 - under 16), International Broadsword, 4th place overall in the Open Championship (15yrs).

Iona Black, from Ellon - (19 - under 21) National Premiership winner, 3rd place overall Open Championship winner.

Rebecca Thow, Whitecairns - (21- under 23) Highland winner. 1st place (16 yrs - over) Broadswords Event, (21-under 24) National Premiership winner, 6th place - Super Sailor Challenge, 3rd place overall in the Open Championship.
