Ellon plans light festivities

COMMUNITY Councillors are pressing on for a spectacular Christmas lights show on November 17.

Community Council treasurer Mark Grant told the Times that this years’ launch would be bigger and better than ever, with a variety of activities for residents to celebrate the switching on of the town’s festive illuminations.

The festivities will include a special parade from Ellon Academy to the junction between Station Road and Bridge Street, where the official switching on will take place.

In addition, Neil Ross Square will be hosting a range of stalls, a specially hired stage for local musical groups to perform, as well as the traditional Santas’ Grotto and facepainting.

Mark said: “It’ll be a smashing event for the whole town - weather permitting, we’re hoping for a crowd of around two or three thousand to turn out.

“There will be music by the Ythan Fiddlers, Buchan Community Radio and The Twa Loons, with other acts to be confirmed, as well as the usual attractions. This year, Blue Water have helpfully given us the loan of a truck which will form the stage beside Neil Ross Square.

“Last year’s Santa’s Grotto was so busy that we’ve arranged for Santa to work through his lunch break this year, so that he can see more children...! Local traders will also be in attendance, with a selection of festive goods for shoppers.”

The parade starts at 4.30pm at the Academy, and will include representatives from a number of the town’s groups, led by Ellon Pipe Band. This year’s Prince and Princess will represent Meiklemill Primary.

The parade will then pass through the town, ending in Riverside Car Park where there will be a fireworks display. The parade will also take in The Square, where there will be a special nativity display.
