Ellon Rotary Young Chef of the Year Competition, 2013
Competitors and judges
Ellon Rotary held its annual ‘Young Chef of the Year’ competition at Ellon Academy where the competitors were complimented by the judges on the quality of their work. The judges were Craig Wilson from Eat on the Green, Leslie Kemp from Ythanvale and Rotary President Forbes Hamilton.
The challenge was to produce a three course meal in two hours, taking into account factors such as health, costing, hygiene, neatness, temperature and presentation as well as the food itself. In summing up, Craig said that all competitors had good features in their menus while some were outstanding, making the choice of winner quite “tricky”. The winner was first year student Megan Walker, whose menu included a Chicken Liver Pate starter with Melba Toast, main of Chicken Teriyaki with Boiled Rice, and a trio of attractive desserts. The other competitors were Harry Carr (runner up), Morvenn Stewart and John Dalman. Each competitor then met the judges privately to hear more detailed comments and they were able to learn how quite simple professional tips can add to even the best presentation. In February Megan will take part in the District Final of the Young Chef Competition to be held in Aberdeen.
