Ellon councillor seeks views on parking charges
Ellon & District Conservative Councillor Gillian Owen is seeking public views on the parking situation in Ellon, after renewing appeals for the price of tickets to be cut in a bid to bring shoppers back to the town.
Claiming that the cost of parking was having an impact on businesses in the town, Cllr Owen said that the present system was unfair.
“Almost the first issue to hit me between the eyes when I was elected nearly five years ago was Ellon’s Parking Charges”, she said.
“I was also disappointed that charges were increased last year despite a promise that they would not rise for three years, but with the economic climate I suppose I should have guessed that parking charges would go up, even if I did tell my colleagues in the Administration Group that would be a mistake.”
Aberdeenshire Council is set to undertake a consultation on permit charges and tariffs in the second half of 2012. Claiming that parking revenues have decreased noticeably since the price rise, Cllr Owen said that while it was unlikely the charges would go away, she hoped the consultation would attract responses from local businesses and residents, and that some new ideas would come out of those responses.
“Pay & Display will not go away but perhaps we can have a more innovative approach to parking,” she said. “I am sure the residents of Ellon will be able to give us a few pointers so have a think and let me know.”
