Ellon hairdressers’ charity event for breast cancer research

A GROUP of Ellon hairdressers are aiming to raise as much money as possible, after one of their co-employeea was diagnosed with breast cancer.

Manager FIona Gray and the ladies at Blue Haven plan to host a fundraising day which, they hope, will raise money for research into the condition. The decision was taken after employee Karyn Sandison was diagnosed with breast cancer earlier this year.

Staff working at the hairdressers, on Market Street, will host their fundraising day at the end of October with the stated aim of raising money both for Breast Cancer Research UK, and for Ward 15 at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary where Karyn is currently undergoing chemotherapy treatment.

Blue Haven Manager Fiona Gray told the Times that the event would be a fantastic way not only to fundraise, but to raise awareness of breast cancer, which remains one of the biggest killers of women in the UK.

“We don’t have a particular target - we just hope to raise as much as we possibly can,” she said. “As part of the fundraising, we will be hosting stalls in the shop on October 28, and a raffle as well. Our customers have donated a lot of items for the stall, while staff have funded the raffle prize draw. We would love as big a turnout as we can get.”

Breast cancer affects 46,000 women in Britain every year according to NHS statistics, with an estimated one in nine women facing the prospect of developing the dieases at some point of their life. Age and genetic history are considered risk factors.
