Footbridge at Newburgh to reopen

The crumbling Butcher's Bridge at Newburgh was closed last November amid safety concerns.

A CRUMBLING footbridge at Newburgh is to reopen following a decision by councillors to fund a temporary solution.

The Butcher’s Bridge, also known as the Keith Tailor Briggie, is the main bridge over the Foveran Burn linking the village and its principal recreation area and community garden, as well as giving access to the wider footpath network.

The structure was closed in November, 2011, following concerns over its safety and likelihood that the main superstructure will have to be replaced.

Councillor Rob Merson, Formartine Area Committee chair, said: “Since the bridge was closed officers of the council have been working with the community to realise a solution to the problem.

“At the meeting we agreed to fund a low-cost temporary fix which would allow the bridge to be reopened.

“The condition of the bridge, with the temporary fix, will be regularly monitored to ensure that there is no further deterioration requiring its closure.”

The cost of achieving the temporary work has been estimated by the council’s engineers at £2,800.

The planning service has agreed a contribution of £1,400, and a similar contribution of £1,400 from the area top up budget was approved by the area committee at its meeting last week.
