Formartine marks Burns’ night season

Groups from all across Formartine have been celebrating the lead up to the Bard’s birthday, by hosting their own Burns’ night celebrations.

On Friday 20 January, Methlick’s Beaton Hall Committee held their supper, hosted by Committee Chairman Mick Gordon. Gordon Bulloch toasted the Haggis, while former Ellon Academy Rector Alan Cameron delivered a spirited rendition of ‘Tam o’Shanter’. Ellon Times reporter Richard Thomson delivered the ‘Toast to the Lassies’, and was replied to by Ellon Academy’s Cathy Fraser, who returned to her Merseyside roots to imagine how Tam o’Shanter’s wife Kate might have responded to him the morning after the night before if she had been Scouse.

Both Gordon and Richard were in action again on Monday night at Oldmeldrum Rotary Club Burns’ Supper in the Redgarth Hotel. Gordon once again addressed the haggis, while Richard entertained club members with a set of Burns’ fiddle tunes. Former Club President Phil Duncan entertained everyone present with a recitation of perennial Burns favourite ‘Holy Willie’s Prayer’.

Ellon’s McDonald Golf Club held their Burns’ Night on Saturday 21, with Alan Cameron delivering the Immortal Memory, Dr Charlie Burgess addressing the haggis, Ron Mackie toasting the lassies and Maureen Strachan replying. Charles Reid was the evening’s piper.

The SNP constituency associations of East Aberdeenshire and Banffshire and Buchan Coast joined forces on Saturday night to host their annual joint Burns’ Supper in Buckley’s Hotel, Turriff. Chaired by Eilidh Whiteford MP, Cllr Sandy Duncan toasted the haggis, while First Minister Alex Salmond toasted the lassies. Mrs Fiona Murray from Portsoy replied on behalf of the lassies.
