Ellon is gearing up for a double helping of fun this weekend.

Emergency services are staging their “Blue Light Fun Day” on Saturday and the annual Ellon Gala will take place the following day.

The fire and police stations will be open from 1.30-4pm for local people and visitors to see round, and a host of events have been lined up.

Among attractions at the fire station will be a vintage appliance, various stalls, safe drive car and officers will be on hand to provide fire safety information.

Vintage tractors and cars will also be on display in the old academy playground. The traditional vintage vehicle parade will take place at 1.15.

Ellon fire station watch manager Ron Beedie said: “We have been doing this for around 34 years and it’s a popular event in the local calendar and is extremely well supported.

“Last year was a scorcher so we’re hoping for the same on Saturday.”

The event raised around £6000 last year for The Firefighters’ Fund and local charities.

A short distance away, Police Scotland will hold their open day.

Visitors to the Bridge Street station can meet local officers and hear about the work of the Mountain Rescue Team and Road Policing Unit, as well as being able to tour the station, see the cells and a crime scene set up.

Sgt James Harrison, who has organised the open day, said: “We are delighted to be able to invite members of the public into the Ellon station and answer any questions people may have about policing and to discuss local concerns.

“This is a great opportunity for the public to see how varied the life of a police officer can be.”

Meanwhile, the Ellon Gala will be held at Gordon Park on Sunday, starting at 11am. This year it has been organised by Ellon and District Round Table and the Ladies Circle.

A varied programme includes pony rides, football and netball tournaments, Ellon Pipe Band, Fire Brigade display, stalls, carnival rides and BBQ.

Round Table spokesman Deni Sarafimoski said: “We’ve got a good line-up of varied entertainment this year and plenty of free entertainment for the kids and parents. All the preparations are well under way and organised.

“We’re hoping for another fine day as last year we saw our best turnout for the gala. We have a few local charities and good causes that we are supporting this year and hope the people of Ellon come out and help us support them “
