Ellon’s Meiklemill School was one of two North-east schools picked for a visit from the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games mascot.

Clyde, the mascot, popped in for a surprise visit, much to the children’s delight on Tuesday.

The school have their very own small version of Clyde who has travelled with pupils on holidays ranging from Mexico to Edinburgh’s Royal Mile to the ice hockey with the deputy head teacher and has even spent time backstage with stars of the Cinderella Panto, but this week saw the actual Clyde mascot appear to say hello.

Head teacher Marlene Johnson said it was a very special day for both the teachers and children.

She told the Times: “It’s been an absolutely fantastic day.

“The children have been very excited.

“It’s been amazing for the children to see Clyde as he’s been with the children in school and abroad.

“It’s been great for us to get picked out of the submissions along with Airyhall Primary School.”

One pupil said the meeting Clyde was ‘awesome’.

Beth Gilmour, from Cumbernauld, designed the winning thistle appearance which was revealed in 2012 and is the first time the official mascot has not been an animal.
