Girls Energy scheme shows real girl power

Around 50 female students from Mintlaw, Peterhead, Turriff and Meldrum academies visited Shell for the third annual ‘Girls Energy’ conference.

The students are all part of the Banff and Buchan College programme which provides training to encourage more women into science, technology, engineering and maths careers.

The theme for this year’s conference was the Brent Decommissioning Cell Management Debate. On the day, students were divided into groups each representing a specific viewpoint on the decommissioning. They discussed the topic from respective angles then presented their findings to everyone with the help of audio visual technology.

Assistant principal at the college, David Cook, said: “This assignment was set to encourage team building, discussion, research, presentation and negotiation skills. This will all be invaluable to them when they enter the world of work.”

At the end of the day members of the conference took a vote to choose the winners (Pink Team) who had a well thought out and balanced presentation as well as a strong negotiator.

The girls are undertaking the Skills for Work Energy course along with their usual school subjects. The course is supported by industrial sponsors and allows the girls to experience real-life examples of engineering and technology in action.
