AN ABERDEENSHIRE primary school is using the digital age to learn more about the Victorian era.

It follows the discovery of the first log book for Newburgh Mathers covering 1875-1903.

The historic book has been digitised by Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire Archives and a copy gifted to the school.

The log was given to recently retired Newburgh head teacher Ian Stephen last year and contains a weekly diary of events at the school.

City archivist Phil Astley said: “It provides a fascinating insight into education during the late Victorian era.

“There are details of what was being taught, the attendance figures, and even the behaviour of the children, which the School Inspector was frequently none too impressed with.”

Entries from the log book were used by P5 pupils in a project last year when they were learning about the Victorian era. The original volume has now been handed to Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire Archives for safekeeping. Newburgh head teacher Gaye Stevenson said they were delighted with the digital copy.

She added: ““The school would like to thank Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire Archives for providing us with this most interesting and useful resource.

“The digital format of this log book will allow the school to use modern technology to ensure even more young people are readily able to access the wealth of local historical information contained within it.

“This information will provide the children with further purposeful opportunities for comparing life in the past with nowadays from a very immediate, local viewpoint.”
