GORDON MP Sir Malcolm Bruce was formally honoured by the Queen last week, as he received his knighthood at Buckingham Palace.

The veteran Liberal Democrat MP, who has served as member for Gordon since 1983, was created a Knight Bachelor on Wednesday for public and political service. His name had appeared in the Queen’s June birthday honours list earlier this year.

Sir Malcolm was joined by his wife, Rosemary, as well as his brother and sister for the ceremony in London.

Following his investiture, Sir Malcolm said: “It was a huge surprise and a privilege to be awarded a knighthood. I have been inundated with letters, cards, texts, Tweets, Facebook comments and phone calls and very much appreciate all the kind comments I have received.

“It is very pleasing to be honoured in the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee year, my 30th year in Parliament and the 50th anniversary of the year I joined the Liberal Party. The citation is for public and political service and I owe a great deal to the people of Gordon who have elected me to Parliament in seven elections.

“I also hope it reflects my work for the deaf community and international development and that it may help focus attention on these key sectors.

“It was a very special day for my family and me on Wednesday when I was invested at Buckingham Palace”.

The Gordon MP is chair of Westminster’s International Development Committee, appointed from within the parliament to scrutinise UK overseas development programmes. He lives in Torphins with his wife and children.
