GRAMPIAN Police will be commemorating the lives of officers and support staff who died while serving the force and its forerunners for the final time next month.
The Grampian Police Memorial Service is to be held on Saturday, March 2, in St Machar’s Cathedral, Aberdeen.
The service will be at 11am and anyone wishing to join in the commemoration is welcome to attend.
It is the fifth year that the tribute has taken place, and with the transition to a single Scottish force on April 1, it will be the last dedicated service for Grampian-based staff.
The service will be led by Chief Constable Colin McKerracher and Force Chaplain, Rev David Swan. The Chief Constable said that with the introduction of the single force, he was eager that the final service for Grampian should take place.
The names of 96 personnel who died while serving with local forces will be read out and candles will be lit.
Chief Constable McKerracher said: “This service aims to bring together staff and guests to honour and remember our colleagues and support their family and friends.
“Although the years pass and work colleagues continue with their work and careers, staff members who have passed away, whilst employed by the Force, are not forgotten and the memorial service is an opportunity to get together and remember them.
“This year will be particularly poignant as this will be the last memorial service organised for those specifically associated with Grampian Police.
“There is already a well-established national memorial service held at the Scottish Police College in Tulliallan every year, but I was keen to hold a local service and so the Grampian Police Memorial Service was introduced five years ago.
“As we move to a single Scottish Police Force, the national memorial service is likely to be the main remembrance event held in future years, and so I am eager that this final service in Grampian takes place.”
The Grampian Police Memorial Service will be inter-denominational, with other faith groups being involved during the service, and the Grampian Police Memorial Book will be on display detailing all personnel who have died.
