Haddo train failure prompts NTS appeal
MANAGERS at Haddo House are appealing for a local model train enthusiast to come forward and help them restore a historic train set.
The unusual appeal comes after the 1940s train set, which formerly belonged to David Gordon, Marquis of Aberdeen and Temair, stopped working, leaving staff puzzled about how to get it running again.
Staff at the house are aiming to have the set restored in time for the venue’s re-opening on April 6 after closing for the winter.
Haddo - with its fixtures, furnishings and the and the train set in question - were gifted to the National Trust for Scotland in 1978 by the late Marquis, with the train forming part of the houses’ display,
Property Manager Julie Lorimer told the Times that the set drew attention to the fact that the house was once a family home, with children living and playing there.
“The set has not been working for some time and is in need of some serious expert attention,” she said. “It is a beautiful piece and we know that David Gordon was very fond of it, reminding us that however grand, Haddo House was a vibrant family home.
“If we can get the railway running smoothly again, we have some exciting plans for incorporating it into the visitor experience here at the house.
“We are looking for experts who can help us restore this beautiful piece to working order and bring another part of Haddo’s history back to life.”
