Hilda is chosen as a WRVS ‘champion’
Hilda Pickard an active volunteer with WRVS Aberdeenshire who has been nominated as a Diamond Champion.
AN ELLON woman has been honoured for her work with the WRVS.
Hilda Pickard has been named by the organisation as one of 60 Diamond Champions in Scotland in recognition of the contribution people over 60 make through volunteering.
Hilda - retired for 15 years - is a WRVS Aberdeenshire volunteer covering Ellon and Inverurie.
Most of her work involves driving elderly and disabled people to and from health centre appointments and shopping trips.
She also assists one day a week with the Transport Helpline, taking calls and booking transport for registered service users.
Hilda told the Times: “I have always been a volunteer of some kind. I saw a leaflet for the WRVS, gave them a ring and that was it.
“I really enjoy doing it so I don’t think I am special.”
The WRVS disagree and a spokeswoman said: “Hilda pours her heart and soul into her role as a community volunteer, helping people younger and older than herself. She gives WRVS countless hours each week in her role.”
Meanwhile, WRVS Aberdeenshire is on the lookout for volunteers. Anyone interested should call Alison on 01888 544017, or Gladys on 01467 626012.
