Improvements to shire Higher exam results
TEACHERS in Aberdeenshire have reason to be pleased, after the latest round of exam results showed improvements on last year.
Figures for the results were released on Tuesday showing an increase in the number of passes at Higher level; with passes at all levels remaining stable compared to last year’s figures.
Passes at Higher increased from 76% to 77% of those sitting the exams while Standard Grade pass rates stayed exactly the same as in 2011, with 99% at Level 3, 90% at Level 4 and 50% at Level 5.
There were notable improvements at Peterhead Academy, where Higher passes rose from 66% in 2011 to 74%.
Around 2,600 pupils sat Higher exams in 36 different subjects, while just under 3,000 students took 15,500 Standard Grade exams, in 26 subjects, and 4,000 pupils sat 8,000 Intermediate 1 and 2 qualifications in 44 subjects.
In addition, 2012 is the first year in a decade where every school in the shire could boast at least one student with five straight A passes at Higher level.
Chair of Aberdeenshire Council’s Education, Learning and Leisure Committee, Cllr Isobel Davidson, said: “For many students across Aberdeenshire, the grades they receive today come as the result of years of hard work and dedication throughout their school career.
“Not only must the achievements of thousands of students be recognised, but also the hard work of a network of parents, teachers, friends and support staff.
“We hope that the growing range of curricular provision available, delivered by us in partnership with other key agencies, will help our pupils develop their potential, interests and capabilities, whether they are academic, vocational, expressive or sporting. This should help our school leavers move on to the next steps in their career.”
Committee vice-chair, Cllr Ron McKail, said: “In Aberdeenshire, publication of the exam results marks the start of a process of detailed analysis and discussion in schools and in the authority, to identify the trends in performance, areas of strength and areas where improvements need to be made.
“This is to make sure that future pupils continue to benefit from learning experiences, as part of a developing curriculum.
“It is very encouraging to see that pass rates continue to improve in some areas and in others have remained largely the same as previous years.”
