ABERDEENSHIRE Council are set to build 24 much needed new council houses in Inverurie as part of a £12.7 million investment in new council housing projects.

The 24 new houses, which will comprises two two-bedroomed bungalows, two blocks of four flats, five two bedroomed and seven three-bedroomed semi-detached houses, are set to be built at Martin Brae in Inverurie, with the project due to be put out to tender soon.

The site of the new housing will require the existing 20 temporary accommodation buildings to be demolished, along with the derelict ATC building nearby. Demolition work is expected to begin later this month.

There will also be new council housing projects in Westhill and Peterhead.

The announcement is part of a pledge made by the Council’s Housing and Social Work Committee to deliver 350 housing units by 2018. The current (Phase 5) of new build work would see a total of 169 units constructed between now and December 2015.

Chair of Policy & Resources Cllr Jim Gifford welcomed the decision. He said: “Demand for council houses continues to grow, we have over 8,000 people now on our waiting list for housing.
