Joy for Tarves woman after reunion with heirloom

A FORMER Tarves woman has been left overjoyed, after a family heirloom which was sold off in the 1950s found its way back to her.

Louisa Innes, who now stays at Bucksburn, was present at the seasonal opening of the Tarves Heritage Centre on Thursday last week, where she got to view - and hold - the bowl, which belonged to her great-grandmother, Maggie Smith.

The ‘Tarvas Bowl’ is a piece of Seton Potteryware, custom made in Aberdeen for Mrs Smith sometime in the 19th century. It had previously been in the family until the 1950s, when, Louisa presumes, it was sold off.

It was recovered by news presenter Kirsty Wark at an auction for TV programe ‘Celebrity Antiques Road Show’ from a sale room in Fife. The programme alerted Les Donaldson, Chairman of Tarves Heritage Society, who began following the bowl’s progress with interest. It was subsequently auctioned in Kent, from whence it came to Tarves after the Heritage Society agreed to purchase it.

Louisa said that she was overjoyed to see the bowl again.

“I remember the bowl from the 1930s,” she said. “I honestly never thought I would see it again. How it got down to Fife, I don’t know.

“It’s certainly sparked off a new interest in my family history, which I’m researching at the moment.”

Louisa has donated a similar pot - which had remained in the family - to sit alongside the Tarvas Bowl at the Heritage Centre, in a display featuring items from the family’s past.

Spokesman Norman Glen told the Times: “Louisa has been a faithful supporter of the Heritage Society, and we’re hugely grateful she could be here to see the bowl returned today.”
