A loveable three-legged Labrador is set to steal the show at a charity event in Aberdeenshire next month.

Playful Katy - who has made a swift recovery from a leg amputation four weeks ago - is expected to take centre stage at DAWGS Day In The Country event held at Haddo House on June 1.

Lynn Paterson, show organiser, has been busily making final preparations, as well as looking after her pet.

Lynn and husband, Ian, from Auchedly near Ellon, adopted Katy from the rescue and rehoming charity DAWGS around seven years ago.

The black Lab, now aged 7 and a half, suffered from a broken leg at around six to eight weeks old, which had been left untreated.

The couple always knew that amputation was on the cards but tried a less radical treatment first in a bid to keep her leg.

Lynn and Ian soon realised that there was no alternative to the surgery as Katy deteriorated and suffered in increasing pain.

Lynn said: “Katy’s previous owners had kept her along with her siblings and mum in dad in a shed.

“She didn’t have the best start in life but thanks to DAWGS she got a second chance and we have had a wonderful dog who has given us so much affection and pleasure over the last 7 years.

“We have had dogs before and love them all equally but Katy is rather special.

“We were amazed how quickly she was up and about after her operation and laughed when the receptionist at the vet told us she had seen the vet and the nurse take Katy for a walk much sooner than usual - and then saw Katy taking them for a walk!”

The North-east charity are looking forward to celebrating their 20th Anniversary this year.

Over the years more than 3000 dogs just like Katy have been re-homed and more continue to be helped every week. The event is aimed at 2, 4 and even 3 legged fluffy pets with children’s entertainments, fun dog activities, stalls, as well as games and quizzes.

Chairman of DAWGS, David Hekelaar added: “We want to give dogs, their owners and families the opportunity to enjoy a day out together while raising awareness of the charity and what it does in the local community.

“Katy’s story has inspired us all recently and we are delighted that we have been able to help her and so many other lovely dogs”

The DAWGS Day In The Country Family Fun event will be held at Haddo Country Park on Sunday, June 1 from 12.30pm to 4pm.

Entry is completely free.
