MP’s veterans awards call

GORDON MP Sir Malcolm Bruce is urging veterans in his constituency to apply for the new Arctic Convoy and Bomber Command awards, announced by the Ministry of Defence on Tuesday.

The launch of the new awards follows Sir John Holmes’ independent medal review and the announcement by the Prime Minister in December that these awards should be made in recognition of the great bravery of those who contributed to the two campaigns.

Now that the Queen has approved designs for the new Arctic Star medal and Bomber Command clasp, production will start this week and could result in up to a quarter of a million veterans, and the families of those who have died, applying to receive them.

Sir Malcolm said: “I am glad that the bravery and dedication of those who sailed with the Russian convoys and served in Bomber Command will be honoured by the nation through this award for sacrifice and service.

“In the North-east we have a proud military heritage and have many veterans who risked their lives to secure the freedom that we now enjoy.

“That is why I welcome the Government’s decision to introduce these new awards and I want to encourage any veterans involved in either campaign or their family members, to make sure they apply for the award.”

Veterans and their families can find the applications for the awards at http://www.veterans-uk.info/arctic_star_index.htm or phone the MOD Medal Office on 08457 800 900 (a local rate number)

Alternatively, they can contact Sir Malcolm’s office in Inverurie on 01467 623413 or email info@malcolmbruce.org.uk for an application to be sent by post.
