MSP backs Liftshare Week

NORTH East MSP Alison McInnes is backing Liftshare Week, which runs this year from October 1 to 5, and is calling on other MSPs to support the campaign.

The initiative is aimed at getting more people to share their journeys and helping to take cars off the road, while also saving participants money and helping to cut carbon emissions.

The Liberal Democrat said: “Liftshare Week is a great idea to get people thinking about how their transport habits affect the environment, and about ways that they can take positive action to reduce their own carbon footprint.

“Getting together with other people who make the same regular journey as you do and sharing a lift to work can have great benefits - not only will it reduce emissions, but it will actually save you money as well.

“Add to that the fact that there will be fewer cars on the road - cutting congestion and so making journeys quicker - and the chance to have a chat on your drive rather than commuting on your own, it is clear to see that car sharing is a real win-win. That is why I have lodged a motion calling on the Scottish Parliament to encourage participation in liftshare.

“Aberdeenshire Council already runs a lift share scheme as do many businesses. The Scottish Government, councils and the private sector need to work together to develop or enhance local schemes.

“Indeed membership of liftshare in the North East has grown by 43% over the past two years, and now lies at more than 6,500 members. This typically saves around £975 per person per year.

A spokesman for the campaign said: “Last year’s liftshare week was a big success, with more than 6,200 new members joining the liftshare network over the five days. Since then the liftshare network has grown by a further 8.5%, so we’ve now had more than 525,000 members join to date.”
