New Ellon school project clears another hurdle

Plans for a new Ellon Academy have taken another step forward.

Councillors on the education, learning and leisure committee met last Thursday (March 22) to consider the £46million replacement, along with the planned new Mearns Academy at Laurenckeirk.

Both projects were approved and will now go before a meeting of the council’s policy and resources committee next month.

Area planning committee members have already backed the proposals, which went out for statutory consultation in September of last year. and were recommended for approval.

The Mearns school project, which would entail a £25million campus on Aberdeen road, is earmarked to open in August, 2014.

The Scottish Futures Trust (SFT) will provide about two thirds of the funding for the Ellon building.

The new 1,200 pupil school at Cromleybank will have more space, with all teaching provided in purpose-built accommodation on a single site from August, 2015

A report by officials which went before last week’s meeting stated: “A report going before today’s committee meeting says: “On completion of the new academy it is anticipated that all staff based at the existing academy at that time will transfer to the new school, in line with their existing contract and HR policies and procedures.

“Funding for the new academy has been identified through the council’s capital plan and from the Scottish Futures Trust.”

The report added that if the plans were not adopted, then additional funding from the SFT would be compromised.
