AN Ellon charity worker has been recognised in the New Year Honours List.

Leslie Simpson, who has been working in China for the last eight years, has been made an OBE for services in charity and philantrophy overseas.

Mrs Simpson said she was humbled by the honour, which she learned about in a call from the UK’s Ambassador in China.

She added: “This was completely unexpected and I was totally stunned when I got the call.

“I am simply one human being trying to help others, however if this award can help me to inspire others to help too, then that would be truly wonderful.”

The 51-year-old moved to Beijing with husband Robin and their three sons. They also adopted a daughter, eight, in China.

She founded Roundabout, which acts a central point for people to donate unwanted items, four years ago and it is run by volunteers.

Mrs Simpson, a former Ellon Academy pupil, explained: “We carry the needs lists for 48 charities in Beijing and many more all over China.

“Requests from the charities is given priority and then items left over are sold in our retail store. Money from the store covers our overheads such as rent and truck hire and also pays for essentials for those in need, such as blankets, clothing, food and medical costs for orphans or people living in poverty.

Mrs Simpson said they would welcome volunteers.

She added: “We have openings for people to come over to China in a volunteer capacity and to help in the work that we do. The work is challenging, at times exhausting, and it is not easy to witness some of the things we do. However, it is also extremely rewarding and totally life-changing.”
