PLANS to improve the car parking available at Forvie Nature Reserve are set to be put in motion later this month, with Scottish Natural Heritage hoping that the improvements will encourage more visitors to the Ythan Estuary.
Work on resurfacing the reserve’s car park at Waterside, on the A975 north of Newburgh, is scheduled to begin on January 30, allowing better access to visitors.
Forvie is famous as a destination for migratory birds, its Neolithic settlement, and for the abandoned village of Forvie, which was swallowed up by the shifting sand dunes in the 16th century - allegedly after the village was cursed by its disposessed owners.
SNH have advised that visitors to the site should anticipate reduced parking capacity for the duration of the works, and that there will be occasions where the car park will be closed altogether to visitors.
Forvie reserve manager, Annabel Drysdale, said: “This will be a real improvement for visitors, but there will be some disruption during the work. Please give us a call if you’d like to check the parking situation ahead of time.”
