Pitmedden woman thanks village for charity support

A PITMEDDEN woman who campaigns for children with heart defects has thanked the people of the village for turning out in force to raise money for her chosen charity.

Participants at the Ladies Pampering Evening generated £1703.45, which will go to the Scottish Association for Children with Heart Disorders

Vikki Carpenter became involved with SACHD after her daughter, Jennifer Booth, was discovered to have a heart defect which means only two of the four chambers of her heart are capable of pumping blood. Seven operations later, and with support from SACHD, Vikki told the Times that five-year old Jennifer can now live a more normal, more active life.

“Up until the last operation, she couldn’t run, jump or ride a bike,” said Vikki. “Since her surgery at Christmas, however, she’s got a bit more puff which means she can take part in more physical activities.”

Since enduring her first surgery at just 12 days old, Jennifer has had open heart surgery twice to correct the underdeveloped right chambers of her heart. Her brothers - Nicholas and Elliot - are healthy, and Vikki puts Jennifer’s heart defect down to ‘bad luck’.

“It’s always scary to think of your child going into the operating theatre,” she said. “People try to sympathise, but no one can understand your fears unless they are going through the same thing. SACHD organise emotional and financial support for families who have children with heart defects, and fund entertainments to make the kids’ visits to hospital more pleasant.”

The Ladies pampering Day offered visitors a chance to sample local fashions, foot and hand massages, and was followed up by a disco and bar.

Vikki told the Times: “We’ve had phenomenal support from the community.”
