Police warning over fraud scam
GRAMPIAN Police are warning businesses to be aware of a fraudulent scam in which they are targeted by fraudsters purporting to be from genuine contracting or supply companies asking them to pay money into a different bank account.
A Grampian Police spokesperson said: “This type of fraud has taken place in different areas of the UK previously and there have now been two recent reports of businesses being targeted in the Grampian area.
“We would remind businesses to always ensure they confirm change of bank account requests with the company directly, and not using any contact details on documentation requesting the change.
“As always, staff should be wary of providing sensitive company information, by phone or other means, especially contract and account information. Companies may wish to also consider establishing with suppliers points of contact for handling and changing sensitive information for that may benefit fraudsters.”
Anyone who feels they may have been targeted by this method or requires further information should contact Grampian Police on 0845 6005700 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
