The people of Inverurie turned out in force on Saturday to welcome home Commonwealth Games medal winners Hannah Miley and Viorel Etko.

Crowds lined the streets as swim ace Hannah and wrestler Viorel received a heroes’ reception.

It was a tremendous show of support for the pair, and the Golden Girl appeared overcome at times by the turn-out.

Inverurie’s Hannah, won swimming gold, and Viorel, who lives in Oldmeldrum, lifted bronze and claimed Scotland’s first Commonwealth Games wrestling medal in 20 years.

The medallists started their parade from Garioch Sports Centre and made their way to the town centre.

The celebration was organised by local business organisation Inverurie4u.

Cheryl Rogerson, owner of Vanity Collections clothing store, said: “It was fantastic and overwhelming to see such support from the town to our athletes. It was so heart-warming to watch Hannah and Vio receive so much love.

“The place was buzzing and the atmosphere was electric – we are one extremely proud town.”

Judy Whyte, of Mitchells Dairy, added: “The welcome Hannah and Vio received in Inverurie was tremendous – people are clearly very proud of their achievements and their success has certainly put Inverurie firmly on the Commonwealth map.

“Great community spirit was shown at this Inverurie4u event, which was organised in only three days, with a number of local individuals, groups and businesses coming forward with offers help before we even had to ask for it.”
