Pupils dive into learning at North-east aquarium

Puppet shows, crab handling, sustainable fishing and beach studies are just some of the activities that school pupils will be getting involved in this year at Macduff Marine Aquarium.

The tourist attraction has launched its new educational programmes, which are supported by Talisman Energy (UK) Limited.

The aquarium has a long established reputation for school visits, welcoming more than 60,000 school children since it opened in 1997 and developing interest and understanding about the marine life found in our seas.

During the summer term, teachers and their classes will be able to choose from a new selection of sea themed topics aimed at specific learning groups.

Early years children will be able to enjoy seaside story time and studies in animal survival and life cycles, while programmes for primary pupils will include investigating where a fishy dinner comes from and how to care for the marine environment. Secondary school classes will get out their welly boots to survey the biology of the beautiful Banff Links beach. The varied programmes are aimed at supporting teachers and offer a range of experiences and outcomes set within the government’s guidelines for the Curriculum for Excellence.During a school visit, aquarium staff will facilitate the pupils’ learning as they explore the aquarium exhibits. The pupils will get hands on with live animals at the aquarium’s touch pools and discuss aspects of marine life related to their topic at school through workshops, presentations and stories.

Teachers will have the opportunity for a pre-visit exploration of the aquarium on Wednesday 24th April 2013, when they can find out what the aquarium has to offer, test their own marine knowledge and prepare for a visit with a class. For more information about the education programmes contact Macduff Marine Aquarium on 01261 833369 or visit www.macduff-aquarium.org.uk
