Hundreds of children in Aberdeenshire are being provided with reflective equipment in a bid to improve their safety as they return home from school during the dark winter evenings.

The Garioch and North Marr Community Safety Group is funding the purchase of reflective armbands, torches and flashing lights for primary school pupils in their area as part of their Winter Safety Project.

It is hoped that the reflective equipment and lights will make pupils more visible to cars and other road users as they return home from school.

Equipment being provided includes a wind-up LED torch, flashing LED lights, and a Velcro reflective armband.

Primary schools involved in the scheme include Alehousewells, Kemnay, Alford, Tough, Tullynessle, Crombie, Westhill, Elrick, Monymusk and Clunie.

Chair of the Garioch and North Marr CSG, Councillor Ron McKail, said: “Through these winter nights it is vital that we make sure our children are properly protected as the make their way home from school.

“We hope that the children will carry the reflective equipment with them, making them more visible to road users.

“It is also important that drivers are on the look out for children crossing Aberdeenshire’s roads, particularly in the afternoons, after school.”

Crombie Primary School head teacher, Scott Calder, said: “The reflective equipment issued to the children will hopefully be of great benefit to them. The important message of keeping safe on the roads is one that children need to revisit regularly and these gifts from the safety group go a long way towards helping this cause.

“It still gets dark very early and now our children can be seen more easily by motorists, which will in turn allow them to travel to and from school safely.”
