Rotarians get tooled up for collections

ROTARIANS in Ellon are getting set to host their annual ‘Tools for Self Reliance Event’ on March 17 and 31 in Ellon Town Centre.

Based at Neil Ross Square between 10am and 1pm, Rotarians from Ellon and District will collect old tools - electrical and otherwise - to be donated to rural communities in Africa.

The scheme sees the tools in question being refurbished at the Camphill Rudolf Steiner Schools in Aberdeen before they are sent on to countries including Ghana, Mozambique, Sierra Leone, tanzania and Uganda. Local craftsmen can then use them to develop their skills and businesses, and build up rural economies often devastated by regional conflict and poverty.

Rotarian Ian Morris told the Times: “The tools we’ve had previously range from garden spades and hoes to leather working equipment, spanners, sewing machines, screws, wood chisels, electrical power tools saws and mincing machines - are all accepted.

“Year on year, the Rotary Club of Ellon are always amazed at the generosity of the Aberdeenshire public, who in some cases donate brand new tools purchased locally on the day, to those who donate tools that have been passed down through family generations. Even the oldest and rustiest of tools can be refurbished and given a new life.”

Anyone who would like more information on how to donate tools, or to find out about the project, can contact Ian on
