Rotary club appeal

ELLON Rotarians have renewed their appeal for the public to support their annual “Tools for Self Reliance” event.

The club is organising a collection for Saturday (March 31) in Neil Ross Square between 10am and 2pm.

Local people are being urged to come forward with unwanted tools ranging from garden spades and hoes to spanners, sewing machines (foot and electric-powered), wood chisels and electrical power tools.

Tools for Self Reliance (TFSR) is a national charity responding to requests from craftsmen in less developed countries for urgently-required hand tools. A network of voluntary grouops and supporters collect them, refurbish them and ship to those in need.

The club organised a collection for last Saturday (March 17) but were disappointed by the response.

Spokesman Alan Gibson said: “We don’t know the reason for it. It might have been down to the good weather.

“We are hoping that more people will donate tools this weekend.”

He added that the club appreciated the generosity of the Aberdeenshire public who in some cases donated brand new tools, to those who handed in ones passed down through the family generations.

They are refurbished at the Rudolf Steiner School in Aberdeen before being sent to Ghana, Mozambique, Sierra Leone, Tanzania and Uganda.

If Saturday’s collection time is not suitable, contact rotarian Ian Morris on 01358 789333 to make alternative arrangements.
