PUPILS in Aberdeenshire did their bit for World Book Day last Thursday.

Schools organised a variety of activities to celebrate authors, illustrators, books and reading. This is the 16th year of World Book Day when children of all ages come together to appreciate reading.

The event’s main aim is to encourage youngsters to explore the pleasures of books and reading by providing them with the opportunity to have a book of their own.

There was a busy programme of activities in North-east schools with many pupils dressed up as characters in popular books.

Cultercullen School held events including a fashion show and book swap. Parents were invited to the afternoon session which included a treasure hunt, making masks and colouring characters .

Acting head teacher Laura Campbell said the children had thoroughly enjoyed the day.

Meanwhile, pupils from Meiklemill’s P4 classes attended a reading day at Ellon Public Library to familiarise them with the facility.

Class teacher Sally Scott told the Times: “To celebrate World Book Day, we brought our classes down so we can encourage the pupils to join their local library, and show them what’s on offer here.”

Pitmedden School P5s donned the dress of characters in their favourite books to celebrate the occasion. Teacher Margaret Rankine said: “They decided themselves to do this for World Book Day.”
