But stormy conditions at the mouth of the Ythan put paid to the transfer and the barrel is now in storage until arrangements are made to finish the voyage.

Local Councillor Rob Merson officially sent the consignment on its way from Ellon on Saturday morning and the plan had been for a handover to the Collieston community boat, Admiral Redsocks.

The beer is for Collieston Boules Club’s traditional Gala Petanque tournament on Wednesday, July 30.

Rowing club events co-ordinator Karen McGonnell said: “Rear Admiral Steve Ritchie traditionally presented a keg for this same evening every year and the crews of the Admiral Redsocks are endeavouring to continue this tradition and keep the spirit of generosity and community flowing.”

Collieston Gala is on Saturday, August 2,
