PUPILS at Tarves School played their part in marking International Peace Day last Friday.

Youngsters in P5 and P6 dressed in white and made small banners to symbolise peace and raise awareness in the school.

They have been assisted by the Rotary Club of Oldmeldrum through the RotaKids project. Tarves has been involved in RotaKids for around three years with P6 and 7 starting it off and P5 pupils become involved ensuring continuity.

Head teacher Heather Scott has been working with P5 and 6s one morning a week on the peace project since the start of the new session and they shared their experiences with the rest of school at assembly on the eve of World Peace Day.

Mrs Scott said: “The pupils have really thought about peace. Some of the children, even in the very early years, have been asking ‘are there still wars’. They didn’t realise that there were countries at war.

“It has highlighted that for them and made them think about beyond their own world, which is good.” Mrs Anne Forster and Rob Rothnie, the club’s District 1010 RotaKids Officers, were at the school to see the peace day events.

Mrs Forster said: “The ideas the children have come up with have just been absolutely phenomenal and of course the Rotary theme for this year is Peace Through Service. They have really embraced the concept of peace.”
