Thousands of youngsters have once again taken part in Aberdeenshire Council’s Summer Reading Challenge.

Nearly 9,000 took in the 2012 Marathon Read Challenge by successfully completing six books of their own choice over the summer holidays.

In recognition of this year’s Olympic Games, the challenge was chosen to link in with the sporting theme and aimed to help promote healthy bodies and minds.

Run by the Aberdeenshire Council Library Service since 2000, the challenge is a fun and accessible way for children of all ages and abilities to get involved with books.

Prizes were presented on Saturday, September 17, to the winners of two fun competitions which ran alongside the reading challenge.

Education, learning and leisure committee chair, Councillor Isobel Davidson, said: “I’m very pleased to hear that this year’s competition has been as popular as ever and that thousands of children once again got involved in the 2012 Marathon Read.

“The continuing success of highlights the important role of libraries and books in our communities and shows that even in this electronic age, children of all ages still enjoy being read to and reading books for themselves.”

Oil company Total has sponsored the event for the past 12 years.
